今日は「ラバウル海軍航空隊」という軍歌で有名なあのラバウル（現：パプアニューギニア領）にて1942年オーストラリア軍を駆逐した日です。
Some may know Rabaul from a Japanese martial tune "Rabaul Air ASW Squadron".
On January 23rd 1942, Japan eliminated Australian forces and took over Rabaul (current Papua New Guinea territory)
ラバウル航空隊は大戦初期には連合軍との空戦において損害率15対1という圧倒的 な強さを誇ってました。しかし、ソロモン海でのガダルカナル島をめぐる戦いで 、連日往復2000キロもの長距離飛行を強いられ、その激しい疲労で貴重な熟練搭 乗員と機体のほとんどを失い、連合軍に敗北し「ラバウル海軍航空隊」の楽譜とレコードがラバウルに届いたのは航空隊撤退後となった悲しい最強航空隊です。
The Japanese Air ASW Squadron of Rabaul was known for the high ratio of damage to the allied nations in air combat tactics during the early months of the Pacific War (The ratio was said to be 15 to 1). But the Air ASW Squadron gradually suffered from fatigue during the battles over the Guadalcanal of Solomon Islands. Lots of highly skilled pilots and fighter planes made flights of 2000km repeatedly. As the result, they grew extremely tired and payed the ultimate price. Although the Air ASW Squadron of Rabaul had overwhelming potential, they were defeated in such a stark status.
To cheer on the fleet, a martial song "Rabaul Air ASW Squadron" was created.
But, the squad never received records or music of it before retreating from Raubal.
