今日は1972年にグアム島にて日本兵であった横井 庄一（よこいしょういち）氏が実に大東亜戦争終結から28年目に発見された日です。横井氏は「生きて本土へは戻らぬ決意」で出かけて行ったという記憶がしっかりとあった為、帰国の際の第一声は「帰ってまいりました．．．恥ずかしながら、生きながらえて帰ってまいりました」というものでした。
４１ years ago from today, on January 24th 1972, Shoichi Yokoi, a Japanese sergeant in the Imperial Japanese Army during the Greater East Asia War, was found in Guam. It had been 28 years since the termination of hostilities of the War.
Yokoi kept his determination not to return to the motherland Japan for the duration of his isolated 28 years survival.
Upon his return to Japan, he stated his famous quote "It is with much embarrassment that I have returned alive."
